Meet the Governors
Tim Smith - Co-chair of Governors
My teenage years were quite exciting with my parents living and working in Iran (before the revolution) and Nigeria. I studied Chemistry at Oxford before starting my career in the IT department of Perkins Engines while singing as a member of the choir at Peterborough Cathedral. I have lived in the Peterborough/Rutland area for most of my working life, bar a 10-year stint in Salisbury and Prince’s Risborough when working at B&Q and M&S head offices. I then saw the light and returned to Rutland, where I have lived for the last 9 years. For most of my career, I have been an IT project manager, running projects both in the UK and Europe with teams from across the world. I have managed teams of all shapes and sizes. It has been fun and has brought me into contact with a wide variety of people and cultures. My work has encompassed many types of businesses, from retail to heavy industry. I have recently retired and I am now actively engaged in giving something back to the community. Being a keen birdwatcher, I volunteer for the RSPB and do other local voluntary work. I still sing and am a member of several local choirs. I applied to be a governor at Casterton College as I believe my knowledge of business, managing finances, and running teams can be used for the benefit of the school, its staff, and pupils. I look forward to the challenges and helping the school as it continues to be an exceptional place to work and study.
Stuart Clark - Governor
I was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, where I attended secondary school before studying at The University of Glasgow and gaining a B.Eng. in Aeronautical Engineering. I joined the Royal Air Force in 2008 as a Royal Air Force Regiment Officer and have completed numerous roles in operations and training positions at Royal Air Force stations around the UK and have completed training exercises and operational tours across the globe, including Belize, USA, Afghanistan, Brazil, Sweden and Jordan. I am currently serving at Royal Air Force Honington in Suffolk, responsible for planning operational outputs.
I moved to Stamford in 2017 with my wife and wanted to support the local community when the opportunity to be a Governor at Casterton College became available. I wanted to bring my knowledge and experience of training delivery and assurance to support the school and community where I could.
In my spare time, I enjoy running, cycling and hillwalking, often trying to escape to the wilder parts of the UK to enjoy the outdoors. Closer to home, I enjoy pub walks and reading a good book.
Helen Miller - Governor
I was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, then spent the second half of my childhood in Cumbria. I have a B.Sc. in Chemistry and an MA in Intercultural Communication, both from the University of Sheffield. I’ve worked in the education sector since 2006, starting at the University of Hertfordshire, before spending a decade in marketing at Pearson and then Discovery Education (yes, part of the Discovery TV network!). I started my own marketing consultancy in 2016 and have had the pleasure of working with several education clients, including OCR, Pearson, Ark Curriculum Plus and Study Group.
We moved to Stamford in 2022, and I am excited to be able to support Casterton College as a governor – I see this as a unique opportunity to contribute, albeit in a small way, to education in my local area.
My partner Luke and I are enjoying getting to know our new town – we can regularly be found trying the latest craft ales and local beers in King’s Head. I love dancing Lindy Hop and Charleston, like a good walk (although I’m definitely a fair-weather walker!) and can often be found with my head in a book or dancing in my kitchen to country music.

Chris Newton MBE
.
Born in Swindon, I spent most of my childhood years moving around Europe before completing my secondary schooling at Hardye’s School in Dorchester. Immediately after leaving school, I joined the British Army as a young soldier and retired in November 2024 after completing 37 years. During my military career, I was fortunate enough to complete numerous operational tours and exercises around the globe. Sport has played a huge part of my life, and in particular rugby, where I have been lucky enough to represent the Royal Artillery in various countries. I have recently started my second career working for Saab UK, continuing to deliver equipment to the UK Armed Forces.
We moved to Rutland in 2009, after being taken by the relaxed atmosphere in the county. I am really looking forward to the role as a governor at Casterton College Rutland, and hopeful I can bring some of my experiences to support the college in the coming years.
In addition to being an avid follower of rugby (albeit from a comfortable armchair now), my spare time is spent playing golf, cycling, running, renovating our house and continuing to travel with my wife.
